RADIO BAHRAIN INTERVIEW(NEW YEARS EVE 2004)

Ok so I got the opportunity to be interviewed on DJ Sabah’s underground music radio show “Silky Cuts.”  I pitched the idea to him and he became very interested since this would be something new for his show.  Since no one is allowed to enter the station, we had to pre-record the interview at his house.  So the interview segment consisted of my mixset, my latest record, and of course other productions from friends.  So, here is the interview in it’s entirety for you to read…

DJ Sabah – “Yea boys and girls there you go, some of DJ Chang’s recent stuff. I’ll let it on for another of couple of minutes, and then we’ll have the Chang interview…in a couple of minutes.”

Back to mix…

DJ Sabah – “Alright boys and girls as promised DJ Chang is with us here..a doing the interview thang.  Chang has been in Bahrain for a while now a, but I’ll the dude himself tell you all about it, and you know all about DJ Chang as you heard from the last 20 or 20 minu..something like that right.  Chang what’s up dude?

DJ Chang – How’s it going man?

DS – “Alright man.  First question is a..why’d you come here in the first place, what when did you hear of Bahrain, and why make the decision to come here?”

DC – I got friends, when I was out in Florida playing over at Simons, a nightclub over there a..friends out there that used to come out and hear me that lived out here in Bahrain.  So I just came out to visit them and play some of their parties, you know.  Hehehe.

DS – “Excellent, excellent, hehehe; and obviously the obvious question dude…what do you think of Bahrain?”

DC – Ah it’s cool man, I like it, a lot of friendly people, and it’s got a lot of potential.  People like to go out and have a good time, and dance which is a good thing, you know.

DS(to his listeners) – “You hear that potential lets utilize it.”

DS – “Alright lets go to the music man, ahh what is the most recent thing that you’ve done, or you been doing?”

DC – Ah the most recent, I did a song on Care Recordings is a record label out of San Francisco.  Me and my friend Amit Shoham did this track called “Island Dreams” and it came out like a month ago.

Enter..clip of “Island Dreams” track…

DJ Sabah – “The first time I got information about you dude, was when a friend of mine, friend of ours Mazen told me that you were coming to Bahrain.  By the way he’s been talking about you for the last two years, you know I thought this is it man were getting the man, and I wasn’t wrong by the way boys & girls.  If you don’t believe me see the guy live man, tonight actually New Years Eve, he’s gonna be rocking it.  I don’t know where, he’s gonna be all over the place just pay attention to the venues and what’s going on the island and you’re hear the guy.  Anyways first time I ever read anything about you was ah on the website which is ah is it, Care Records.com?”

Dj Chang – Care Recordings dot com.  Care Recordings website!

DS – “Care Recordings dot com, of course there’s a www before that.  Tell them more about the website, I mean what can I expect on the website, basically what’s the deal with the website?”

DC – Yea on the website you got some links to the audio files of each singles on the label you can listen to online, and umm the new stuff thats coming out he’s(DJ Nathan) working on some new material that should out in January, and it’s got bios up there and contact info.

Enter – clip of “Island Dreams”

Dj Sabah – “Whats happening in the states musically tell us something about the musical sense of the American crowd there.”

Dj Chang -  Ahh as far as the underground dance stuff there?

DS – “Ah yea the scene that you are involved with there…”

DC – It really depends where cause it is such a spread out country, each area is different in it’s own way.  Ah it’s definitely going more underground like it’s going back to the idea of certain nights happening where people want to follow where the vibe is at.  It’s not like it was like a couple of years ago where there were loads of people going out to every venue. It seems to be now that people are more picky, because of the economic situation the States is in right now. So people do not spend as much money as they used to so they’re very very picky where they go out, where they’ll spend their money at, ahh well that’s definitely how it is in San Francisco now.  The Miami scene is more Latin orientated, and what’s going on in Miami right now, you’re getting a lot of people from the Carribean and South America moving immigrating there.  Especially a lot of people from Argentina, and that’s actually making the club scene very big there right now, and it’s actually starting to fuse with the Latin Rock scene.  Which is a very interesting thing going on there, and I think there is like two or three mega-clubs opening up there like Privelage just opened up last month in Miami, and Space 34 is still going on.  And then like other places like Chicago & New York they got their own thing going on…

Enter – “Deep Sands” mixset featuring the track “Renix” by Tiefschwarz.

Dj Sabah – “Djs, Bahrain djs, we talked about like the crowd the American crowd, the music direction, and what you think of Bahrain…ahh what do you think obviously you know the djs here by now pretty well I mean umm if you want to mention them one by one, but you know who you guys are.  Well what do you think of our djs? Their taste, their knowledge…”

Dj Chang – I mean, ahh..I don’t know man…there’s a definite…

DS – “Be nice Chang come on…”

DC – Hahahaha…

DS – “Hehehehe…”

DC – Definitely man they’re doing what they can I think with what they have.  So they’re doing a good job, I mean provided you got no record stores here so definitely you can’t get any music out here unless you are ordering it all the time.  I mean you don’t have any other, there’s really not a foundation here for Dance music, you know.  Which is kind of like you’re taking something from the outside and bringing it in, and trying to make it take root somehow.  It is very difficult to do, hahaha…  So I mean, I think their doing the best they can with what they got, I mean.

DS – “I think the commitment was there’s no faulting our guys when it comes to commitment, but…what about technically?  Are they there with the big boys, or is it just something that the scene here does not help you have to be there for you to go to the next level, if you know what I’m saying?”

DC – What technical wise?

DS – “Yea!”

DC – Well technical wise it’s just about practicing man, and the more you do it the better you get at it.  The more you’re out there playing the better you get at programming you know all that stuff, ahh it takes years of experience…

Enter – clip of “Island Dreams” Dj Adnan’s remix.

DS -  “What about this next track that you chose for us Chang?  Tell us about that.

DC – This the theme song for 3 Degrees, this is the anthem for 3 Degrees.  3 Degrees is a crew of people I play for, they’re based out of Chicago, and I’m doing their residency for them out in San Francisco for their monthly parties.  It’s a good group of people man, and their parties are about bringing people together and have parties like in different cities like New York City, San Francisco, Chicago, and they do a party every year at the Winter Music Conference in Miami also.  It’s a really good vibe of people you know, and they got like membership cards with a good family people.  There involved with some big heavy hitter Chicago djs too like a…people like Frankie Knuckles, Mark Farina, Derrick Carter, ah…Gene Farris…

Enter – theme for 3 Degrees song…”What if there was a community where hatred was love and war was unity, what if there was no insecurity, what if confidence produced tranquility, what if utopia was 3 Degrees would we be free, what if we were free to just be…  These are the words of 3 Degrees…”  3 Degrees website!

Dj Sabah – “Alright Chang this is it time for us to say bye, thanks a lot for being here, and sharing some of your thoughts, and opinions, and background with us man, any last words dude?”

Dj Chang – Yea all I can say is be yourself man in what ever you do man, and don’t let anyone tell you you can’t do anything.  Cause anything is possible man, it’s just up to you man, if you want to make it happen, it’ll happen.  You know accept what you have now, and you can go forward from there.

DS – “Alright thanks a lot dude.”

DC – Alright

DS – “Peace!”

DC – “Peace!”
